 New Minor: Astronomy
Mars from Newton Observatory
Mars from Newton Observatory

Beginning with the Fall 2007 semester, the Physics Department will be offering a new minor in astronomy. This new program seeks to give students an appreciation of the beauty and order of the known universe and also to show them how astronomers have come to learn what we know. The study of astronomy helps us to understand the formation and evolution of planetary systems, the stars, galaxies, and the universe as a whole. Astronomy courses at Allegheny address questions such as: "What would it be like to travel to a black hole?"; "What is the fate of the universe?"; and "Is there other intelligent life?" We explore the reasons for everyday phenomena such as the seasons and the phases of the Moon, and we probe the cutting edge science that describes heavenly bodies such as planets, stars, and galaxies. Classes make use of both the Wible Planetarium and the Newton Observatory.  Students Honored
Physics Banquet

The 2007 Physics Banquet was a big success. Students and Faculty enjoyed some wonderful food and afterwards, all of our students were honored for their hard work throughout the academic year. Sophomores, juniors, and graduating seniors all received a small gift and individual students were recognized for their contributions to research and the general life of the Department.
